The Nuclear Fuel Cycle

About this course

The scientific content relies on renowned experts who explain in details each step of the nuclear fuel cycle. It is strengthened by a series of amazing nuclear sites visits that France can offer on its territory. Those visits give the opportunity for an exposure to the industrial applications and various aspects of operational safety. The course takes advantage of the INSTN collaboration with key French stakeholders from Research and Industry: CEA,  Orano, Framatome and ANDRA.

The course addresses the following items, all of which are illustrated by scientific aspects as well as operational industrial sites.

  • Nuclear Fuel Cycle: The global picture;
  • Geology of Uranium: Exploration, mining and Resources;
  • The Front-End of the Fuel Cycle: Markets and Economics;
  • Uranium Enrichment
  • Boiler/Fuel: the constraints;
  • Fuel Assembly: General Design, fabrication;
  • Options for Spent Fuel Management;
  • Interim Storage of Spent Fuel and HLW – Current State-of-the-Art Technology;
  • The Uranium recycling and reprocessing;
  • Recycling Operations and Technology;
  • Transport of radioactive materials;
  • Activity, History and Public Acceptance Issues.

One of the key aspects of the course is the series of technical visits to operational sites:

  • Conversion plants: Orano Malvési and Philippe Coste (Orano);
  • Enrichment plants: Georges BESSE and Georges Besse II (Orano);
  • Fuel fabrication plant: FBFC Romans (Framatome);
  • Spent fuel reprocessing plant: La Hague (vitrification, pools, Production line);
  • MOX fabrication plant: MELOX site (Orano);
  • Waste management sites: geological disposal and on-surface disposal sites (ANDRA).

The course is provided in a residential mode across various regions of France. This means that all transports, accommodation, catering is taken in charge during course days (costs included in the enrollment fee). Participants will only have to take care of their catering over the weekend. More details available on request.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the training, the participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the various front-end processes needed for the Uranium to be used in the core of the Pressurized Water Reactors: Mining, milling, conversion, enrichment and fuel fabrication;
  • Describe the back-end activities options for spent nuclear fuel;
  • Explain the back-end activities for spent nuclear fuel in a closed fuel cycle as implemented by France: reprocessing and recycling;
  • Describe the nuclear waste management activities and explain nuclear waste management in France: storage and disposal;
  • Describe cost-drivers for the nuclear fuel cycle depending on national options;
  • Explain issues for the transport of nuclear materials and explain safe approaches to deal with this activity.

Type of Certification

Certificate without Examination

Application details

The course is designed for technicians, scientists and engineers working in the nuclear field and interested in obtaining a global picture and advanced knowledge and immersion in the nuclear fuel cycle.

It is recommended that participants have the following knowledge / skills in order to take maximum banafit from the course:

  • Basic concepts of chemistry (solutions, solvents, etc…) and separative chemistry;
  • Basic concepts of nuclear physics: fission reaction, radioactivity, law of radioactive decay and radiological properties of Uranium and Plutonium;
  • Basic concepts of the design and operation of a Pressurized Water Reactor core;
  • Basic concepts of radiological protection and nuclear criticality safety.

In order to allow for the security clearances necessary to access the industrial sites, some personal data will be required for this sole purpose. The respect of any security rule of the industrial sites is mandatory.

For the 2025 session, the participation fees are set at 9290€.
