The education programme to become a Radiation Protection Expert is a
post-academic curriculum (20 ECTS) of one year. The programme meets the
requirements of the Royal Decree of 20 July 2001 (ARBIS/RGPRI) and has
been designed for everyone who wishes to become officially accredited as
a Radiation Protection Expert (RPE) in radiological or nuclear
applications for the industrial or medical sector.
The programme is an
initiative of SCK CEN, UHasselt, ISIB and IRE.
The course covers the scientific and technological fundamentals of
radiological and nuclear techniques, with specific attention to
radiation protection. The SCK CEN Academy and UHasselt organise the
education in Dutch on Friday, alternately in Hasselt (campus Diepenbeek)
and on the site of SCK CEN in Mol.
Consult Dutch website or the website of UHasselt for more information about the post-graduate education programme ‘Radiation Protection Expert’.
In the European radiation protection legislation (Directive
2013/59/Euratom of the Council), a radiation protection expert is
defined as: a person who has, or if national legislation provides
for this, a group of persons who have the necessary knowledge, training
and experience to give advice on radiation protection so as to ensure an
effective protection of persons and whose competence in this area has
been recognised by the competent authorities. More information
about radiation protection experts can be found in article 34
(Consultation with a radiation protection expert) and 82 (Radiation
Protection Expert) of this legislation.
