About this course

SUMMER SCHOOL

📅 September 15-19, 2025
📍 National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, Athens, Greece

The FREDMANS project (EC Grant Agreement 101060800) aims to increase safety and efficiency in both nuclear power generation and spent fuel recycling. The transition from oxide fuel to a denser fissile material with higher thermal conductivity, such as a nitride fuel, can increase both the operational safety and the economic impact of nuclear power. At the same time, a transition to a greener society in both the generation and use of electricity will drastically increase the consumption of finite materials.

Thus, the project addresses the most current issues regarding advanced manufacturing, recyclability, waste management, and industrial applications, with a focus on nitride fuel. On all these topics, the crucial aspect of safety is given great attention and, since the real safety of future nuclear systems is achieved through well-educated people, FREDMANS implements an extensive Training & Education program.

The Summer School on “Actinide Science and Innovative Nuclear Fuel Cycles” will address topics reflecting the challenges posed by innovative reactor systems from the point of view of nuclear fuel design and the associated fuel cycle and intends to stimulate the interest of students and young scientists and improve their understanding and knowledge in the field of advanced nuclear fuels, throughout all stages of the fuel cycle.

The summer school lectures will cover all relevant scientific and technical aspects, from the basics of actinide science to the latest scientific developments in fabrication, recycling, and waste treatment techniques.

TOPICS

  • Basics on Actinide chemistry
  • Actinides applications in nuclear energy
  • Advanced Technologies for UN fabrication
  • Actinides management along the fuel cycle
  • Safety, Regulations, and Future Directions

A Technical visit to the Tandem Accelerator Laboratory on September 19, 2025 will complete the theoretical programme.

The detailed agenda will be available soon.

LECTURERS

Lectures will be given by the best European specialists in the nuclear fuel research from Chalmers University, KTH, JRC, PSI, NNL, ENEA and Westinghouse

TARGET AUDIENCE

The Summer School is mainly addressed to: Students, Master students, PhD students and early stage researchers and it is limited to 30 trainees.

GRANT AVAILABILITY

A grant to cover travel and accommodation costs, consisting of a lump sum of EUR 1000, may be offered by the project to candidates selected following the evaluation of the submitted applications.
